Objective
Racism and violence against AAPI individuals peaked during the pandemic, seriously hurting Asian-owned businesses and the Asian community. This racism is fueled by ignorance, stereotypes and fear. But through education, we can broaden people’s understanding of what Asian culture is, and more importantly celebrate who the people are and how they add vibrance and invaluable diversity to our communities.
Approach
For AAPI Heritage Month, we created a digital resource of beloved local Asian businesses and locations in NYC to highlight the diversity and richness of the Asian cultures in our community. This map and directory was curated by Patients & Purpose employees and included thoughtful notes about each place. And to encourage supporting these places, employees were encouraged to submit receipts of their purchases or donations, which the agency matched in a charitable donation at the end of the May.
Role
I brought this idea to our internal Culture Committee and offered to lead the project. I collaborated with another art director and copywriter to create the resource, and worked with Committee leads to solidify the donation aspect of the project.
